The City of Newark is developing an update to its Climate Action Plan —titled Climate Action Newark (CAN) —to serve as a comprehensive framework to mitigate the impacts of climate change and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. CAN will provide a roadmap for the city to prioritize actions that reduce GHG emissions in alignment with state targets and promote environmental, social, economic, and public health benefits to the community. Strategies included in CAN will reduce GHG emissions from transportation, buildings, solid waste and water use.

Climate change is already impacting our region, presenting community members with an opportunity to provide input and help shape the City’s actions moving forward. CAN represents the City’s dedication to reducing GHG emissions and strengthening climate resilience in Newark. Proposed policies and programs will reduce emissions through actions such as increasing electric vehicle infrastructure and improving building energy efficiency. Overall, CAN will be essential for mitigating climate change, safeguarding the environment, fostering economic growth, and improving the quality of life for current and future generations.

The development of CAN has several steps including: (1) Updating the city's Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory and developing a GHG emissions forecast; (2) Conducting public outreach; (3) Recommending GHG reduction strategies and mitigation measures for City Council consideration; (4) Develop a draft and final Climate Action Plan Update; and (5) Adopt the Climate Plan Update.

What You Can Do

Every little bit helps when it comes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Each of the residents here in Newark, California can make a significant contribution to decreasing its harmful effects.

Just as the City created its action plan, you can create your own plan for you and your family. First, start by taking inventory of your greenhouse gas emissions.
