Police Officer Lateral and Academy Graduate - This is a continuous recruitment.
Newark Police Officers emphasize community-based policing efforts by patrolling within fixed sectors of the City. Officers investigate all criminal complaints and handle calls for service from the community. The Newark Police Officer enjoys a variety of specialized assignments including Detectives, Traffic unit, Canine (K9) unit, School Resource Officer (SRO), and Southern Alameda County Major Crimes Task Force (SACMCTF). New officers receive field training from an experienced NPD officer prior to assuming the responsibilities of a solo beat officer. All officers are expected to collaboratively problem solve and build partnerships with the community.
Police Officer Trainee - Entry & Academy Attendee -This is a continuous recruitment.
The Police Officer Trainee position is an entry level position, requiring no prior law enforcement experience. The Police Officer Trainee is a temporary employee. The trainee attends a P.O.S.T. certified academy. Upon successful completion of the academy, the trainee will be eligible for appointment to the position of Police Officer.

Current Temporary/Seasonal Openings

This temporary position works with the City’s maintenance staff to perform: unskilled labor in the parks and landscape medians, street and sidewalk maintenance, street sign maintenance, and fleet building maintenance. Duties include, but are not limited to: raking, emptying trash cans and litter removal, irrigation repair, weeding, edging, street sign maintenance and graffiti removal.
Recreation Leader - Youth & Adult Sports
Energetic, organized, and responsible individuals who enjoy working with school-age children are encouraged to apply. Recreation Leaders will assist in the implementation and planning of a wide variety of arts and crafts, sports, games, special events, and excursions. Candidates will work either for the Ash Street Summer program at Ash Street Park or Camp Newark at the Silliman Center. Both positions require candidates to work in an outdoor environment.
Recreation Leader I – Ash Street/Camp Newark Camp Counselor
The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department is seeking enthusiastic individuals who are not only passionate about working with the public but also possess a genuine interest in coaching and making a positive impact as role models in their lives. This role involves teaching fundamentals of various sports, coaching, refereeing and scorekeeping for our youth and adult sports programs.
Aquatics Instructor I – Swim Instructor
The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department is looking for Aquatic Instructors (Swim Instructors) for our fantastic swim lessons and aquatic programs, to work at the Silliman Activity & Family Aquatic Center. We are looking for positive, patient, motivated, self-driven individuals that have a passion for working with children and wish to make a difference in a child's life by teaching them lifelong water skills!
